Chairperson’s Profile
We live in an age when charity itself has become corporate and NGO’s have been publicly questioned on their integrity. Yet Sukarya stands unique and aloof in its human and direct approach to social service. This is further underlined by the sincerity of its approach and its belief in doing some things very well rather than doing many things badly. Such a worldview can only come from a single person’s passion and vision. Mrs. Meera Satpathy is that person.
She started Sukarya in the year 1999 with a few acquaintances with a common spiritual motivation. The General Health and Awareness Camp in 1999 was funded through personal contacts and individual donors. Today, Sukarya deals with complex operations such as the “Empowerment of Rural Women through SHGs and Entrepreneurship Building” - Saathi Project, “Knowledge based Intervention for Reproductive health Advocacy and action” KIRAN project, “Intervention study among adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers to reduce prevalence of anaemia – a contributory factor of maternal morbidity & mortality” and is funded by organizations as large as the Population Foundation of India, the Charities Aid Foundation etc. |

Mrs. Satpathy brings a mother and a homemaker’s eye for detail to Sukarya, which is further augmented by keen entrepreneurial instincts, which were honed as the founder and Managing Director of Pearl Advertising Agency, a stint that has 18 years. Renowned for utmost sincerity in every aspect, and following up, even in the most trying circumstances.
Her unstinting vision links the quality of health directly to the quality of society, something that even the most seasoned agency fails to spot. Mrs. Satpathy’s clarity on the issue is encapsulated in the motto “Better health better society.” Due to her unique approach, Sukarya is not merely a developmental organization focusing on health, but an empowerment organization that raises awareness and gives people the tools to enable them to improve their health and well-being through a better society.
The common thread that runs through her work is not to be the provider of needs, but to be an enabler of people. She wishes to give the power back to her focus group, women, and children, in reforming society in terms of its attitude to healthcare, and extension life skills, educational and vocational training etc. This is the link between the first 1999 project of General Health & Awareness Camps, the Saath Saath project in 2004 the “Intervention study among adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers to reduce prevalence of anaemia – a contributory factor of maternal morbidity & mortality” project in 2006, the Empowerment of Rural Women through SHGs and Entrepreneurship Building” - - Saathi program in 2007 and the ever popular and highly successful SPICE AND CEREAL PROCESSING UNIT AS A LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITY FOR WOMEN , started in 2004.
She has a keen eye for identifying problems, often in an objective manner. Referring to credible reports and statistics by bodies such as the National Council for Women and National Commission for Macroeconomics and Health is a big part of her initial analysis of a situation as is collaborating with the right agencies to execute her vision. These partnering agencies come from a diverse range of backgrounds including Max Hospitals, Prayas, TATA and Population Foundation of India.
It is her faith in her vision that has kept the organization going even at the most financially and personally trying times. Sukarya is Mrs. Satpathy’s brainchild, and her touch will always be vital to its vision and success. |
