Swasthya Kendra Village Bandhwari

Swasthya Kendra Village Bandhwari Year 2008-2009

About the project

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) joined hands for starting a health center in village Bandhwari under the project, "Better Health Status of Men, Women and Children with the help of a Community Health Centre in village Bandhwari". The project was started, as the village did not have a regular health care facility and was a backward village with a poor health status.

Sukarya decided to create a health facility with people’s participation, with an idea to make a move from healthcare for the people to health care by the people. The project duration was from February 2007 to January 2008.

The objectives of the project were to provide preventive and curative health care, health education and promotion of good health practices.

After implementing the project for one year, some of the positive outcomes were active participation and interest of the community in the project .The community provided rooms free of cost to run the center. There was an increase in the awareness level regarding good health, nutrition, safe drinking water and sanitation. It led to increased health seeking behavior in the community. Patients started visiting the health centre and the government dispensaries. The center served more than 2000 people in the community. The center served the poor and the old in the community those who suffer from poor health as they cannot afford healthcare.

Most of the people came to the health center with complaints of viral, bacterial and fungal infections, worm infestation, skin allergies, scabies; these diseases are food or water borne.

Implementing the project for the span of one year in the village Bandhwari brought to light some specific health issues which need to be addressed on a priority basis to bring about an overall improvement in the health status among men, women and children. The issues identified are poor sanitation in the community, which leads to various skin diseases among all age groups .Poor spacing and frequent pregnancies leading to poor maternal and child health. Malnutrition and poor hygiene among children in the age group of 3 to 15, leading to malnutrition and anemia.

With a concern to address these issues Sukarya is implementing an extension of the project "Better health status of men, women and children in village Bandhwari" in the year 2008-2009 for one year, so that Sukarya can address the issues identified and collaborate with various organizations (govt & non govt) for the sustainability of the community health centre and achieve the objective of improved health status of the Bandhwari Gram Panchayat.

Main Objectives

    • To conduct a baseline survey for assessment of the present health status of the community in terms of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) in village Bandhwari.
    • To continue with the primary health care services provided by the community health centre in a regular and a systematic manner.
    • To promote good health practices and positive health seeking behavior through health education sessions, generating health awareness among people e.g. importance of nutrition, reproductive and sexual health, immunization, TB, DOTS programme ,sanitation, hygiene, safe drinking water and family planning.
